What was the
Problem
A Coachella-bound quick turnaround.
In March of 2015, a class friend of mine asked me about finding her a designer who would be interested in taking on a project to help redesign a mobile application. beGlammed was a startup that would sent hairstylists and makeup artists to their customer’s location to “be glammed” (ha). This we-come-to-you mentality removes the burden of the customer having to take time out of their day to make a trip to a beautician and gives the convenience back to the customer. The project was ambitious—we had less than 30 days to design and launch in time for the opening weekend of the Coachella Music Festival. Initially, my role for the project was to develop the user experience, create wireframes to hand to a designer, and finally translate the designer’s mockups into CSS for a developer to implement. All this remained true, with the added task of fully fleshing out the front-end in a way that the other developer would integrate it with his current system.
What was the
Solution
A comprehensive app with an expedient booking process.
The team worked tirelessly to deliver an attractive mobile app that enables users to book hair and makeup stylists in a few taps. The app was centered around efficiency and expediency, making processes like checkout simple by letting users duplicate a current or previous appointment for ultra-fast checkout in the future. We also explored new technologies for mobile payments to make it possible for one person to book an appointment for multiple people and take advantage of split payments. You can also check out the app on Android and iOS.
What was our
Process
The small team—consisting of Amanda, Fei, and myself—committed to delivering a completed application to the in time for it to debut at the Coachella Music Festival, giving us just under one month. In under two weeks we collaborated tirelessly to complete the design and I developed the front-end framework of the application using HTML, SCSS, and jQuery.
Rapid wireframing
First we spent a couple of days of evaluating the existing capabilities. Then we spent a weekend filling whiteboards with the faults of the pre-existing app, the client’s requirements for the new app, and thoughtful wireframes of every idea tossed around. When complete, I handed the wireframes over to Fei to overlay the branding and design the UI.
Efficient Development
As mockups were finishing, I developed the front-end for the screens using HTML, SCSS and jQuery, prioritizing efficiency and responsiveness. I meticulously named and ordered every line of code to make it scannable and easy to work with for the leading app developer who put everything together. You can view the app on Android and iOS.
